Art of Encampment: the breakdown
Delivering dispatches from beyond borders to those curious enough to care and daring enough to roam
the breakdown ||
Art of Encampment || a worldview and skillset, as well as the rucksack to put it all in when it’s time to move on…
For the curious, we are writers, archaeologists, musicians, educators, at least one cartographer, and one handyman, photographers, artists, and storytellers. Honestly, there’s nothing extremely unique in that itself, we strongly agree. So, what we do offer? That’s the right question.
By the last count, we’ve lived in over 68 places: in both long-term and short-term shelters:
In all variety of tents, condos, lodges, cabins, vehicles, apartments, Airbnb’s, trailers, ridiculously large houses, and dilapidated shacks. In at least one plush brand-new Chinese Pacific Island casino and one former 1920s speak-easy country club. We’ve had four mortgages on four different houses in NC, TX, Maine, and Sweden, occupied; two statehouses in Micronesia, a city hall in Senegal, a 15th c. Turkish citadel on the Tihama Plain, assorted guest houses, gardeners quarters, too many cookie-cutter hotels, a few questionably cheap motels, several thick coral walled and mangrove timbered houses in Swahili Old Towns, adobe earthen structures on four Continents, and an array of unimaginative American suburbs cut off from any walkable café and market.
We’re a trusted reference and experienced guide featuring; original writing, travel guides, news, ongoing climate crisis updates, serial features, archaeology & history fieldnotes, dancehall fakebooks, global—provincial—nomadic—sedentary perspectives, music, book, & film reviews, resources & links, plus much, much more.
